Post-Operative Instructions for Root Canal (Endodontic) Treatment

Root canal therpay can take 1, 2 or 3
appointments depending on the individual case.  It is also possible that you may need to be referred to a specialist.  It is possible to experience any of the following symptoms after any one of these appointments:  discomfort, sensitivity to temperature, sensitivity to pressure and/or chewing, or possible swelling.

It is difficult to predict which symptoms, if any, you may experience and to what extent.  In complicated cases pain medication may be necessary.

If you experience swelling, call our office; it may be necessary to prescribe an antibiotic for you.

A temporary filling may be used to seal the tooth between visits.

Be gentle on the tooth while eating until the final restoration is placed.

On some occasions it may be necessary for you to be referred to an endodontist, a dentist that specializes in this treatment, due to unforeseen circumstances.

During root canal therapy the main nerve, blood and nutrient supply to the tooth is removed.  This may cause the tooth to become weaker and more prone to fracture, which can result in the need to extract the tooth.  In many cases a full coverage crown (cap) may be recommended to prevent this from happening.

A small percentage of teeth that receive endodontic therpay may fail and result in the loss of the tooth.
