The Diagnodent 
The Diagnodent is a small handheld unit that helps detect cavities at the earliest possible stage so that the most appropriate treatment can be designed for you. It measures fluorescence within the teeth. At the wavelength that the Diagnodent unit is, teeth without cavities exhibit little or no fluorescence. This causes very low readings. A cavity, on the other hand, will exhibit fluorescence in proportion to the size of the cavity. The higher the reading, the larger the cavity.
