Post-Extraction Instructions |
|
Moderate discomfort and swelling occur within the first 12 hours and start to decrease after 48 hours following most oral surgery procedures. The amount of discomfort and swelling is unpredictable. It is important to follow the following instructions: - Maintain gentle pressure by biting on gauze for 30-45 minutes as instructed to stop any bleeding. If bleeding continues, place another gauze and continue to apply firm pressure for 30 minutes. Repeat if necessary.
- For at least 24 hours do not:
- Smoke
- Drink through a straw
- Drink alcohol, carbonated beverages (soda), or hot liquids
- Blow your nose
- Spit excessively
Any of these things may cause the blood clots over the surgery site to disloadge from the "socket" causing "dry socket" and resulting in unnecessary discomfort. - Avoid excessive activity and do not pick at the surgical area. Do maintain a soft diet for the remainder of the day, things like warm soup, ice cream, milk shakes (remember, no straw), et cetera.
- If your discomfort or bleeding continues or worsens call the office for reexamination. For swelling the day of oral surgery apply ice to the face over the area 30 minutes on and 30 minutes off for 4 to 5 hours. The next day apply moist heat for 30 minutes on and 30 minutes off.
- If you were given medications take them according to the instructions.
- Tomorrow morning, start rinsing gently with warm saltwater (1/4 teaspoon salt to 1 cup water) every 4 hours for 2 days.
- If any problems do arise, do not hesitate to call us at 501-778-8201.
